People on the internet, in the streets, and on the radio stations have either been ranting and raging over the hit sensation coming out of Toronto, or they have been downplaying this new musicians ability to create music. I am going to break down everything, and explain why I think the haters are wrong when they say that Drake will not be able to make it in the music industry, and that he is not a skilled musician. This post should put the haters to sleep, and give all those who are big supporters of Drake more reason to love the Hip-Hop/R&B musician. I was posed with a question in a recent e-mail from a reader that went along the lines of, “Can you please explain to me why people think Drake is such a great musician?” I responded to her that I would do so, but not through e-mail, rather, I will do a post on the site about why I think Drake is such a good musician. So here you have it, let’s take a travel through my mind and my reasoning, shall we?
February 2006 marked a big month in Drake’s musical career. He released his second mixtape entitled, Comeback Season. The mixtape garnered a ton of attention and gained much success and recognition. This was the game changer for Drake’s musical career. Comeback Season really showed his versatility as a Hip-Hop/R&B musician. When I popped this tape into my CD player (yes, I had a CD player in ’06 and I used it on a regular basis, not everyone had iPod’s!), I was amazed and taken aback by the voice I was hearing in my speakers. Drake’s voice has this sort of versatility that most musicians don’t have… He can sing and he can rap. By him doing both, he is able to bring a truly unique sound to the table, and is able to captivate a young and older audience. He isn’t someone who is tied down to one musical style, on some tracks he will be rapping and getting his R&B on, and then on the next, he will be hitting beautiful melodies and notes that you would never hear out of R&B musicians now a day. Tracks like, “The Last Hope (Feat. Kardinal Offishall & Andreena Mill),” “Man of the Year (Feat. Lil’ Wayne),” “City is Mine,” “Teach U a Lesson,” & “Missin’ You (Remix),” all exemplify that Drake has the ability to be great. Out of the twenty four track mixtape, I can safely say that each and every song was solid and worth listening to. Each track brought a different sound to the table, on some tracks, he brought it hard rapping, and on other tracks, he sang it for the ladies and gave that R&B twist to the track. Then you have your tracks that he is singing and belting out notes that most musicians that are in the game can’t hit.
February 13th, 2009, was the career changing mixtape which got the attention of teens, young adults, music producers, label companies, and musicians all around the music industry. So Far Gone hit the wires that day, and ended up being a huge success and arguably one of the greatest mixtapes of the year. After two hours of its release, there were 8,000 downloads. I don’t think I have ever heard of a mixtape being downloaded 8,000 times in two hours, if you have, then please give me the name of the tape and the musician, so I can check it out. So Far Gone featured such a higher level of music out of the Toronto musician. I don’t know what it was about this tape, but it had everything. I don’t know what other mixtapes are coming out this year, but if I had to do the rankings right now, So Far Gone would be number one! If you don’t have this mixtape, then you’re missing out on something special and arguably one of the best mixtapes to come out in a long time. Drake’s new installment of So Far Gone is what definitely propelled his career even further. This tape should be a barometer to all up and coming musicians as to where the quality of their work should be when they put out a mixtape. Drake seems to go hard on no matter what he is doing. I hate the musicians that only go half way on a mixtape and full-throttle on an LP. Anyway, cop So Far Gone, and listen to the next big thing in the music industry.Incoming search terms:
