TGLR Presents: Super Mash Bros (Interview)

by ICECrush on October 7, 2009

Man, we’re just rollin’ out the interviews. Our latest interview happens to be with Girl Talk’s Hot Cousins: SUPER MASH BROS. We were incredibly psyched when we snagged these guys, and you should be too. If you don’t know who they are, these mash-up masters are responsible for Fuck Bitches. Get Euros. and their latest All About the Scrillions. Nick Fenmore and Dick Fink are Super Mash Bros; Nick answered our questions.

TGLR Presents: Super Mash Bros

TGLR: Can you give us a little introduction to Super Mash Bros? Who are
you? How did you guys meet? And why do you do what you do?

Nick: Dick and I went high school about a block away from each other; we met through some mutual friends. At the time, we were both DJing separately with other people but we were always big fans of each other. We actually decided to start mashing as a dare from a friend of ours (the infamous “adler” that we have two tracks about). We were driving around listening to girl talk, or maybe it was e-603, and he bet us that we couldn’t compete.

TGLR: Both of your albums are insane, but we can tell that there is a
difference in sound. Did you have two different ideas in mind when
putting them together?

Nick: After that, we started making the beginning of “fuck bitches. get euros.” on my moms couch and we threw a release party to about 100 of our close friends. After that, it kinda took off and we still haven’t really digested it all. Our second album was definitely a lot harder to make. Sample based music always gets harder as you make more for obvious reasons… you run out of samples! Since we try and keep the majority of our samples recognizable, we had to work a lot harder to make the mashes work on the second album. I personally think it made us more creative in a sense. Also, our second album was created in two different cities. The first album we made together in LA, the second was tossed back and forth over the internet between Portland and LA.

TGLR: What is lazerwolf and where did you get the name Super Mash Bros from?

Nick: No one has actually asked us about lazerwolf before haha. It was a website that Dick created like 4 years ago that he posted pictures of parties on (yeah, when that was cool); it was also the name of his DJ group at the time.  The name Super Mash Bros came from the video game; to this day, someone will always fuck up and call us the smash bros but it’s all good because that game rules.

TGLR: How do you make your mashups? (Software, Song Mapping, Time)

Nick: We make our tracks in Ableton 7. A lot of the ideas come from us usually just messing around while we are DJing. Dick goes between serato and traktor and I stick with traktor for the versatility of four decks. We try and pay special attention to the keys and tempos of our mashes; just because two songs are awesome doesn’t mean they can go together!

TGLR: Did Girl Talk inspire you, or are you guys your own entity?

Nick: Girl Talk definitely inspired us to get into the mash-up game but when we started we made sure to point out what we loved and didn’t love about him and create our own unique version. A big problem with his mixes for us was that they were too overworked; of course, as technicians of digital music, we have tons of respect and appreciation for what he can do, however we believe that the dance party should come first and the technical glitter second.

TGLR: Mac or PC?

Nick: We are both proud Mac users.

TGLR: How long did it take you guys to learn how to mash-up tracks, how did
you start, and is it worth it?

Nick: It didn’t take us too long to figure out the whole computer DJing thing. I was a classical musician for most of my life and Dick is a computer genius so the collaboration worked out pretty well. Dick taught me the ins and outs of ableton.

TGLR: Do you plan on using your mash-up/producing expertise in a career
further down the line?

Nick: It’s a very rewarding job, we love entertaining people and partying with them so i’d say it’s definitely worth it, what’s great about the way we do it, sometimes we’ll DJ separately as Super Mash Bros., even though it may be only one of us, it’s the same SMB show, this way we get to perform for as many people as possible. We never really planned on ever making music a career for us but now that the opportunities have presented themselves, we would definitely consider it.

TGLR: Is Super Mash Bros planning a 3rd album?

Nick: At the moment, we don’t have definite plans for a 3rd album.

TGLR: How is playing live and do you mash-up on the go, or how does that work?

Nick: When we play live we have a general outline of what we are going to do and if new ideas come to us in the middle of our set, fuck it, why not! Most of the times we play shows, we’ll end up being so hyped by the end of our hour set that we just want to DJ after and we’ll play till one of us passes out (or until dick drops aerosmith “i don’t want to miss a thing”).

TGLR: How long do you think it’ll be before @LaurenConrad will tweet back?

Nick: We hope it’s not too much longer before LC responds. To be completely honest, we were a little late to the party finding out that she is no longer on the hills haha but we’re planning on just following her around till she acknowledges us. Either that or find a new celeb that will party with us. I’ll be honest, i’ve considered carrying a ring around with me at all times just in case I run into Taylor Swift.

TGLR: If you guys were to go head to head in Super Smash Bros, who would
win? Who is your favorite character?

Nick: It would be a close call, but i’ll say i’d win since i’m doing this interview. I always play as ness, kid with the yo-yo can’t go wrong. Dick opts for kirby.

TGLR: Which is more important: Fuckin’ Bitches and Gettin’ Euros or the Scrillions?

Nick: Neither album is more important, we love them both equally. (Don’t think they understood what I was asking :) )
