What a surprise! We were fortunate to receive answers to the our interview questions from the other half of Super Mash Bros, Dick, and we’re really excited to present you with pt. 2 of our interview. Once again…ENJOY
!
TGLR Presents: Super Mash Bros (Part 2)
TGLR: Can you give us a little introduction to Super Mash Bros? Who are
you? How did you guys meet? And why do you do what you do?
Dick: We’re Nick and Dick, two friends who went to highschool down the street from each other and crossed paths while DJing house parties in LA. We do what we do because we like to make people dance.
TGLR: Both of your albums are insane, but we can tell that there is a
difference in sound. Did you have two different ideas in mind when
putting them together?
Dick: The first album we didn’t quite understand the process of making all the tracks flow together at the very beginning. With the second album we had all the technical skills down, so it gave us more room to try and push ourselves creatively.
TGLR: What is lazerwolf and where did you get the name Super Mash Bros from?
Dick: Lazerwolf was the name that my friend Maurice and I DJed under a long time ago, I just had the domain laying around so its what our webpage originally went up on. Super Mash Bros is just as obvious as you might think, we love Super Smash Bros (for N64) and it just sounded too good.
TGLR: How do you make your mashups? (Software, Song Mapping, Time)
Dick: The software we use is Ableton Live. Its really amazing in terms of changing tempos, pitches, slicing stuff up, really doing anything with audio. We just sit around and try to find songs at similar tempos that sound good together, and build tracks from there.
TGLR: Did Girl Talk inspire you, or are you guys your own entity?
Dick: Girltalk was definitely an inspiration, but we always felt like doing something a bit different. Girltalk can be a little bit too hectic for my liking, too many samples at once for really short times. We definitely wanted to find song pairings that really stood well on their own.
TGLR: Mac or PC?
Dick: Grew up using PC’s, but got a Mac a few years ago. I’m not some super crazy fanatic, I know they’re all the same on the inside, but I’m definitely partial to it.
TGLR: How long did it take you guys to learn how to mash-up tracks, how did
you start, and is it worth it?
Dick: Coming from a background in more traditional DJing, I was basically making a mash-up every time I played at a party and would transition from one song to the next. Taking the next step into more concrete mash-ups wasn’t too big of a leap. Was it worth it? I don’t think I ever thought about it that way, it just sort of happened. Ask me that one in five years.
TGLR: Do you plan on using your mash-up/producing expertise in a career
further down the line?
Dick: Not specifically, my college doesn’t have a degree in mash-ups, nor do I feel like future employers will care if I can layer rap acapellas over 90’s hits…but if you know any that do, let me know!
TGLR: Is Super Mash Bros planning a 3rd album?
Dick: Something might be in the works…..*shifty eyes*
TGLR: How is playing live and do you mash-up on the go, or how does that work?
Dick: Playing live is too much fun. We both mash-up on the go with brand new stuff as well as combining songs from our albums.
TGLR: How long do you think it’ll be before @LaurenConrad will tweet back?
Dick: Hopefully soon…I’m sure she’s super busy doing celebrity stuff.
TGLR: If you guys were to go head to head in Super Smash Bros, who would
win? Who is your favorite character?
Dick: I would say Nick would win. Pikachu is my favorite character.
TGLR: Which is more important: Fuckin’ Bitches and Gettin’ Euros or the Scrillions?
Dick: Taking naps is the most important. Never forget that.
