Entertainer Of The Year
Nominees: Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, George Strait, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban.
All these five people have great chances; the association really picked a good entertaining line-up. Kenny Chesney is going for his 5th straight Entertainer of the Year award but this time around, there’s a little competition. Kenny released an album this year as well as touring the country over the summer with Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert, seems like a non-stop party to me. Brad Paisley who is up for quite a few more awards this year along with this one is a damn strong candidate. With all he’s done this year including duets, albums, hott singles, and tours; along with his new style of himself, he is almost a shoe-in. Ohh and what can you not say about George Strait, everything this man sings is country at its best! He’s a pure Samaritan and this Troubadour never gets old to me. Miss Taylor Swift, wow what a year for this lil’ sweetheart. Her top selling album, sold out tour with Kellie Pickler and Gloriana, along with her NEXT tour being sold out! Also her character and generally what she’s done for country. She’s the cow that never comes down from the moon, a forever arching basketball, she took off and exploded onto the scene like Columbia, she Defies Gravity, an unstoppable force that hits an immovable force and makes it move on up, she is simply it. Her songs, along with herself as a person and her voice all combine to make her music unforgettable. This girls a legend in the making and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if she broke ol’ Kenny’s streak. And finally Keith Urban between his great album, his shows, his duet with Brad Paisley, and his hair; I’d say he’s got the least chance, but who knows, may be this years sleeper.
Album Of The Year
Nominees: American Saturday Night-Brad Paisley, Defying Gravity-Keith Urban, Fearless-Taylor Swift, Love on the Inside-Sugarland, That Lonesome Song-Jamey Johnson.
Love on the Inside by Sugarland is a good album in general, but really not much exposure probably due to the fact that it all sounds generally the same, just borderline Christian folk music. Also only the hit songs are good to me, the rest seems like they just didn’t try. Once again we have a sleeper pick but hey, it’d still blow me away if That Lonesome Song won it this year, not to say it doesn’t deserve it or that Jamey Johnson doesn’t. He’s done magnificently well as a new artist and this album tells it all. Now this is what I’m talking about with Brad Paisleys new style. I feel as though American Saturday Night is a new mature sight of this man. “Welcome to the Future” is right now streaming smoothly through my computer speakers and I may be a little late but right now its one of my top played songs. “Then” which is up for a few awards is also a great song, you know, in general this is a great flow of some greater songs. Keith Urban is close to a perfect country artist, he’s got rythym, flow, above average lyrics, and he’s a master guitarist. Defying gravity shows all of that, but one thing it lacks is it living up to the name, it’s short of creativity, go ahead and listen to it. Fearless by Taylor Swift… can you say ‘Sales’? This teenager has been a serious lifeline for the industry. Fearless has it all.
Female Vocalist Of The Year
Nominees: Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood.
Seriously, Taylor Swift speaks for herself. She’s a straight up angel. But I think she’s got a few more years till she gets this one. Carrie Underwood’s album Play On is one of my favorites of the year. Also what a good woman she is, like I said in previous articles, she’s country’s Bono. But I think she comes up just short if the CMA voters follow history. That leaves us with the vets. Miranda Lambert is a classic country chick; she’s beautiful, blonde, and dangerous. She’s a straight up badass! Great voice and great summer tour with Kenny Chesney and Lady Antebellum. Not to mention her newest album Revolution, which hasn’t stopped playing from my speakers since it came out. Martina McBride’s album back in March Shine, is a real good one. It’s an album that shows and tells truly how far she’s come. She continues to prove her amazing talent again and again. Reba McEntire probably has the best voice in country music. I had waited so freakin long for her to release another album and it came out earlier this year, it’s a great one. I think her voice gets better with age, also her show’s still just as hilarious to watch.
Male Vocalist Of The Year
Nominees: Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, George Strait, Keith Urban.
Keith Urban has a nice voice but it kinda reminds me of NSYNC, I’d honestly be surprised to see him win this one. Kenny Chesney’s voice is so freakin soothing and its so pure that hell, he could sing just about any genre of music and I think he’d still be just as popular as he is. Brad Paisleys climbed the charts so quickly; he may just have made it to the top this year with his catchy lyrics and silky delivery. Hey! It’s Hootie! Straight outta Hootie & The Blowfish is Darius Rucker, a newbie on the scene. We all know what kinda voice he has and it fits well in this music from the south. It’s gentle and makes you appreciate life somehow, also his album Learn to Live, top grade stuff fo’shizzle dizzle. This man is a definite possibility and I’d love to see it happen and I think its bound to happen one day but it may be a bit early for Darius Rucker. Once again George Strait, his voice simply IS country. This crazy Texan has been on top of his game for years and still is, who knows? Could pull it off.
Best Music Video Award
Nominees: “Boots On”-Randy Houser, “Love Story”-Taylor Swift, “People are Crazy”-Billy Currington, “Start a Band”- Brad Paisley duet with Keith Urban, “Troubadour”-George Strait.
If the video for “Boots On” doesn’t win best music video then I’m gonna go ahead and give it the award for the knee slappin funniest music video, and cutest. That baby singin ‘She’s got me thinking I just might leave here with her tonight’ is damn near the more funnier things I done seen in life. “Love Story” might as well be made into a movie, the video is so well done and Taylor Swift looks so beautiful in it. “People are Crazy” is such a nice song and the video touches your heart. Go on and watch it you’ll see what I mean. The video for “Start a Band” is a plain out fun one, you can tell everyone involved had fun and it makes you want to go and be in the video and maybe even ‘Get you a guitar and learn how to play, cut up some jeans, and come up with a name’. The old Troubadour in the video for “Troubadour” makes you think for real. The video shows George Strait at his ranch in Texas and cuts to videos and photos of him back in the day. Makes you think how the time in your own life has passed.
Best Musical Event
Nominees: “Old Enough”-The Racounteurs Feat. Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe, “Cowgirls Don’t Cry”- Brooks & Dunn Feat. Reba McEntire, “Down The Road”-Kenny Chesney with Mac McAnally, “I Told You So”-Carrie Underwood Feat. Randy Travis, “Everything But Quits”-Lee Ann Womack duet with George Strait, “Start A Band”-Brad Paisley duet with Keith Urban.
This category is STACKED! Some great stars in here, in fact, I think the only one that sticks out like a sore thumb here is “Old Enough”; it just doesn’t belong or contend with the rest of these. Although a great duet, I just don’t see how “Everything But Quits”, an album track from Lee Ann Womack’s Call Me Crazy album will end up winning this award. So now it’s down to “Cowgirls Don’t Cry”, “Down The Road”, “Start A Band”, and “I Told You So”. Which were all successful songs for sure. The CMA voters could give it to “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” for Brooks & Dunn’s retirement or for Reba’s revival to the country music industry with her great new album. 20-years ago “I Told You So” was an award winning hit by Randy Travis, and the fact that Carrie Underwood recruited him to come and bring it back with her may give the voters some instinctive for that one. Similar story with “Down The Road” which may I just mention is also just such a poetic song, simple and simply nice. If it doesn’t win, it’ll still hold a place with me. How could we forget “Start A Band”? These two are just so instrumentally talented, grand guitarists and they just did a hell of a job on this song which was played so much this year. This is a toughy.
Best New Artist
Nominees: Randy Houser, Jamey Johnson, Darius Rucker, Jake Owen, Zac Brown Band.
Also from tip to toe, a stacked list. This year was a grand year for the country genre when it comes to new artists. Hell, all but Jake Owen are nominated for multiple awards. Jake had some fantastic catchy singles but I think he’s got a ways to go before he gets an award. Randy Houser had a great year and good album, a nice hit song but I don’t think it’ll be enough. Leaves us with three. Between Zac Brown Bands exposure, attention, and fan base; Jamey Johnsons raw country talent, and Darius Rucker’s magnificent and familiar voice, its gonna be a real close one. Don’t you all wish they could just share?
Best Single
Nominees: “Chicken Fried”-Zac Brown Band, “I Run To You”-Lady Antebellum, “In Color”-Jamey Johnson, “People Are Crazy”-Billy Currington, “Then”-Brad Paisley.
This one was NOT fun to think about, real hard. If there’s one we can dismiss though I’d have to say it’s “I Run To You”, it is a good song, maybe best on the album, but it just didn’t get the airtime or exposure that’d have put it in line with the other nominations. As opposed to, um…. Lets say “Chicken Fried”? Never have I ever heard a song that was so addictive, which led to its immensely massive airplay. The hit made fans for the group and was just an overall fun song. “In Color” is a great song overall and just touches my heart and gives me a certain feeling each time I listen to it. A similar feeling to “People Are Crazy” a few month favorite of mine that tells an amazing story. “Then” of course is a definite possibility for this award, great vocals, lyrics, instrumentals, and story. But we shall see folks.
Best Song (Song name and writer(s))
Nominees: “Chicken Fried”-Zac Brown and Wyatt Durette, “I Told You So”-Randy Travis, “In Color”-Jamey Johnson, Lee Thomas Miller, James Otto. “People Are Crazy”-Bobby Braddock and Troy Jones, “Then”-Brad Paisley, Chris Dubois, and Ashley Gorley.
Remember, this award is for the simple written song, lyrics mainly. Although catchy lyrics and whatnot, I think that “Chicken Fried” is out. And honestly I don’t think there gonna give the same award to a song twice after 20 years, so I’m gonna go ahead and predict that “I Told You So” doesn’t take the cake. That leaves us with three extremely well written songs. This ones tough but I say the top runners are “Then” and “In Color”. Like I said “People Are Crazy” is an extremely well written song, but for some reason it’s missing something that the other two have, and hell be damned, I can’t figure it out. Real Powerhouses are the other two joints. I was just sitting here on the porch thinking for the past ten minutes about it and I still can’t think of a reasonable argument to put one in front of the other. 50-50 chance I’d say, but don’t worry now, you’ll still get a prediction.
Vocal Duo Of The Year
Nominees: Big & Rich, Brooks & Dunn, Joey + Rory, Montgomery Gentry, Sugarland.
I’m gonna go ahead and count Big & Rich out on this one, they just haven’t done enough this year to deserve this award. They toured a few places and released a Greatest hits album but c’mon now, there are better nominees here. Joey + Rory is an interesting case, although they may not win the award, the fact that the duo did sell 200,000 copies of their album The Life of A Song with only one Top-30 hit which was “Cheater, Cheater”, was enough to get the CMA voters attention. Montgomery Gentry will have a skirmish for it as well with Sugarland who had a successful tour and a successful CD/DVD release. And then there’s Brooks & Dunn who made an announcement this year that all but assured them to win this award. This means the CMA voters might just give it to them one last time, but who knows? I don’t, or do I?
Vocal Group Of The Year
Nominees: The Eagles, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Rascal Flatts, Zac Brown Band.
The Eagles weren’t necessarily inactive this year, but they didn’t do much. So they’re out. Lady Antebellum had a great year touring and are still consistently that good ass band that no one can dislike. Little Big Town has had a very respectable year indeed, touring and whatnot they’ve been great. Rascal Flatts are definetally the veterans and the big men on campus of the list. But watch out boys, the bands a’comin! Zac Brown Band that is, they exploded onto the scene and took it by the horns. Them or Lady Antebellum may be the ones to top Rascal Flatts this year. But wait, the Flatts got one thing on them all and it’s a completely and utterly sold-out arena tour under their belts. This should be a real damn interesting category to watch. Mmmhmm.
Here’s the fun part, the part that I lost hours of sleep over, the part I’ve had countless debates on, done incalculable amounts of research on, and wasted hours ponderin on. The moment I’ve been waiting for since I sat down on this little table outside on the porch in the blaring sun with my Beta fish Maria, her food, a pair of aviators, and my phone and computer to start writing this article only to have Maria fast asleep and me not needing the av’s anymore.
