Taylor Swift Drives It On Home: 2009 CMA Awards (Review)

by Country MANE on November 12, 2009

Good morning from the Holy Land! Yes, I mean morning. So yes, right now I am in Jerusalem, Israel, and it is currently 3:00 AM, and yes, I realize I will be up until 6:00 AM writing this for you good people. I’m sitting on the ground with my buddy Marc in a tiny hallway with a computer streaming the ABC channel and another in my lap. And yes indeed, I, Country MANE, will be writing a play-by-play review of the CMA’s specifically for you people of Tha Good Life Community.  So the show is seconds from staring, let’s get ready to rumble.

Taylor Swift’s performance was great; I loved how they started it off with an interview and it just scared men everywhere.  It was real heartwarming to see Taylor slide down that pole, Jesus Christ. A

Okay, so I got the first award prediction wrong. Big deal, I’ll take it with pride. And I was blown away by them but not surprised.  ”I Run To You” is a magnificent song, if I were the voters I probably would have chose differently though, but in the end I’m proud of Lady Antebellum and congratulate them on an amazing single.

Darius Rucker was as giddy as I was when I won perfect attendance award in 1st grade.  You can tell how much he enjoys being a country singer and who can blame him?  seems like a fun ass job, don’t it? A+

Holy cow, y’all remember how torn I was between “Then” and the best song of 2009 “In Color”? It really was basically a coin toss and especially now, I wish I could have picked both, but I mean hey, you know what it means when that’s needed? It means country had a great freakin’ year, and it did.

I was really hoping Brad would perform “Welcome To The Future”, and he did (love the song).  Moesy and Wendy, y’all cant tell me this song is boring!  Song gives me the feel goods.  Seeing Brad Paisleys signature shiny bright guitar and the actual setting for the performance made it all the better, swell job Host. This performance gets an A. This past year at the big big music festival, Bonnaroo, the Zac Brown Band covered “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” which I wasn’t there for but I found it and got it on my iPod just a few months ago. When I heard Carrie Underwood claim that Zac Brown Band was playing a country-rock classic, I KNEW it would be the same, and they did not disappoint.  Zac Brown may soon challenge Brad Paisley in a guitar playing contest. But Good Lord, Charlie Daniels would be proud as hell. I’ll give it an A+. GEORGE STRAIT IS MY HERO. Period, thats it.  He knows what’s up.  To be honest with y’all, that was my first time seeing George Strait perform live.  Now I really have to go to a concert by him, it’d be nuts, yeah? “Twang” is a magnificent song, and George Strait is a good man so he gets an A. I had actually never listened to Lady Antebellum’s “I Need You Now”, but after there performance, I’m turned on, up, and blastin’ out the speakers. B+

Wow, 0 for 3 for Country Mane, oh well.  All I need is my love for country music, my veterans, and watchin’ the CMA’s with Marc Jacobs by my side.  Who may i say was right in his prediction comment! Yes Ladies and Gents, Lady Antebellum won best vocal group of the year.  Congratulations on a phenomenal year and I hope for more to come.

Okay, I thought the music video for “Cowboy Casanova” was hott, it has nothing on her live performance at the CMA’s this year.  It was so hott I called an ambulance cause I got burn marks. Whooooooooooo. A+

I don’t know what to say, I guess all I can say is that country music is huge and has tons of talent.  I mean c’mon, who is to guess between Zac Brown Band and Darius Rucker.  In the end I’m really, really happy Darius won it.  Especially after seeing his post award speech, he deserved it. Seriously, did you see how excited he was? He brings the hype.  I mean really, after an already extremely successful career he completely changes gear, and works his ass straight off, and succeeds…. Darius Rucker wins, he just wins.

Vince Gill and Daughtry: who woulda thought they would combine forces to have such a spectacular performance.  Well ya know what they did.  I’m lovin the new song, i hope we hear more from this duo, who gets a B.  Okay, okay I’ll say it, I had maybe listened to “Till Summer Comes Around” once or twice before now, but this had me mesmerized.  Maybe it was his voice, or his band, or his guitar playing, or even the crazy light murals above his head while he was doin’ his thang which gets an A.  It was a very nice performance. He’s baaaaacccckkk! TIMMMAAAYYY!  He’s got that “Southern Voice” ya know? He’s got it and down pact.  The background for this performance was great, following each and every word he sang.  It really gives me a good feeling knowing that he is back and hasn’t lost a single gah dang step.  He will always be my favorite, and he always delivers an A+. Before I continue I’m going to say God Bless Our Troops, may they always be safe. I gotta be honest I don’t listen to much Sugarland, I’m sure they got there hits, but I wasn’t a fan of this performance, it gets a C.

Finally!  I knew this one was right, Fearless is an exceptional album.  I love Taylor’s diary.  And let me just say she looked really beautiful in that dress as she was standing up on that stage with the award in her hand on the verge of crying tears of joy.  I love you Taylor Swift, and congratulations on your big award.

Here we go, and here comes more tears, from Marc and me that is.  Brooks & Dunn’s last performance together. Also including ZZ Topp, which is interesting but a good addition.  ”Honky Tonk Stomp” was a great choice of final song, as it is an anthem in my book and the book of many others.  The power and vibes coming from the duo was immense, as it always is but you all know exactly what I mean. They deserved every bit of that standing ovation..A+.  Okay so the more this show has gone on the more I’m liking Jamey Johnson. He is the image of a country music artist.  Takes after the originals: Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Merle Haggard… the best of the best.  A grumpy old simple considerate man who doesn’t change his facial expression.  That duet with Kid Rock was a very great performance, Jamey is the next big thing.  You heard it from Country MANE first! Jamey and Kid get a B+.
Junior! First of all may I just wish that Dale Earnhardt Sr. rest in piece and it’s absolutely great what Dale Jr., Chevy, NASCAR, and the CMA’s is doing. Plus I’m a huge fan of the new Camaros.

I thought for sure Brooks & Dunn would win Vocal Duo of the year, but hey I’m not gonna take anything away from Sugarland. They had a very good year and it was a great move of them to invite Brooks & Dunn up, really touched my heart.

I’m gonna stand by my stance of Randy Housers “Boots On” music video being the best of the year, it was just so damn creative.  But yes, Taylor Swift’s video for “Love Story” is a close second to me. It’s good stuff.

I agree with Taylor, the age of “fifteen” was an interesting one for me.  Wouldn’t compare to her year though, it’s when she found her dream.  Sitting there on that stool surrounded by hundreds of her fans with her own guitar and that pretty dress on, you know she couldn’t help but remember and really have some deep ass thoughts… A.

Again I basically had to flip a coin, and again… I was wrong. Damn coin.  Brad Paisley won male vocalist of the year, and he definitely deserved every centimeter of that award.  A good album, good tour, he is a great host of the CMA’s, and he’s keepin up!  Congratulations Brad Paisley.

“Big Green Tractor” is in my top 10 right now.  Great performance, Jason Aldean, and lucky you for all the ladies wanting a piece of you…A-.  Martina McBride is a pure country sweetheart. Martina and George together are pretty incredible… A-. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, Reba McEntire has got the best voice in country music.  Her new album is phenomenal as was her performance…A.  I’ve said things about Billy Currington’s “People Are Crazy”, and I hold to them. So you know…B+.

Wow, I am surprised, see I thought Taylor was a good Female vocalist, but Reba was the best female vocalist of all time! Ha, kidding, but really, I thought it’d be Reba or Carrie Underwood.  But hey, Taylor’s amazing, and I’m jealous she got that hug from Kris Kristofferson, like her jokes too. Congrats T-Swift! Here’s what we’ve all been waiting for Kenny Chesney and Dave Matthews, “I’m Alive” has been on my chill playlist ever since I first heard it.  Ol’ Kenny sittin there on a stool and Davey boy comes in sits right next to him.  A fantastic duet these two make, maybe we’ll hear more? A+

Yay I am correct! Brad Paisley and Keith Urban’s “Start A Band” won The Musical Event Of The Year Award. It was the guitars, I’m tellin’ ya people, it gave em that edge.  A big congratulations to Brad and Keith, and a small one to me for my second win.

The big one… here it is, this is really and truly what we are here for. And the award for Entertainer of the Year goes to… Taylor Swift! Yes, and she is only 19.  She opened at one point or another for each and every one of the other nominees including the presenter. That is her third damn award tonight, she really had a great night.  Imagine people, what is going through her head right this second.  You look at Reba, Martina, Lee Ann, Miranda, The Judds, Faith Hill; you see Taylor in all of them, Swift is here to stay.  She’s left her mark and she will leave it over and over and over again. I am so happy for her and everyone around her. Congratulations Taylor Swift…. Also Marc here would like you all to know he met her once…

SO there you have it people, I don’t think there’s much more to say except that I hope I didnt dissapoint y’all too much with my predictions, and that I hope y’all really enjoyed the show.  Nighty Night.
