Some Alternative Artwork For All Of You To Check Out
Well the album hasn’t formally come out yet, but thanks to a slip up by Amazon, the album is out there. Amazon mixed up the release date and supposedly sent out 500 copies of the Rap gone Rock musicians upcoming release entitled, Rebirth. I have yet to download the album, however, I have been lucky enough to preview the album online, so I figured, why not write a review on it and give you all my take on Lil’ Wayne’s upcoming Rebirth release which is due out February 1st, 2010. In February, Weezy will be starting to serve his prison sentence for gun charges. Anyway, without prolonging this review any longer, I give you, Rebirth.
I am not going to lie, when I first heard that Lil’ Wayne was going to be doing a rock album, I thought to myself that this would be an album I would not purchase. Similarly to when I found out Kanye West was going 808′s on us and put out 808′s & Heartbreak, I find myself eating my words and being a hypocrite. I was able to preview the Weezy rock album online, and I was impressed with what I heard. Like 808′s, I did not love every single track on the album, but for the most part, songs such as, “American Star,” “Drop The World,” and “Runnin’” were all songs that I would definitely play in the car or in the dorms at school. What really got me was that Wayne was able to feature Eminem on a “rock-based” track. I am not going to lie, Eminem crushed his part on the track, and it is definitely one of the main reasons I love that song so much. ”Knockout” featuring Young Money‘s Nikki Minaj was not too bad either, and is definitely something I could “rock-out” to when I am just hanging out. I am not going to lie, the overall feel and sound to the album is pretty different, far more different then ‘Ye’s 808′s LP. I will break each track down for you, but you can definitely feel a strong Kevin Rudolf (who was signed to Young Money a year ago) presence on the majority of the tracks on the LP (not to mention he is featured on “One Way Trip”).
The Break Down:
American Star (Feat. Shanell)
Definitely a hot track. Shanell really makes or breaks the opening track, and she definitely helped out with the vocals. I really rocked out to this one, and it is one of those songs that I will hit up every now and then for some pump up music.
Prom Queen (Feat. Shanell)
Definitely the “hit song” of Rebirth, “Prom Queen” is a track that almost everyone knows by now. The song features some heavy guitar and the lyrical works on this one are pretty cool. I really like the track, it’s fast paced and something that you could definitely rock when you are in the car. I wouldn’t classify this one as a “party playlist” track.
Ground Zero
A different sort of sounding track, not really one of my favorites on the album, but definitely something worth listening to if you enjoy Wayne’s rock stuff.
Da Da Da
Another “iffy” track by Weezy here, not that every track isn’t good, but this one was just way too different for me. Auto-Tune is one thing, I don’t know what he is doing to his voice on this one. However, around the 1:58 mark, the song gets into that “hip-hop” feel, and it pretty much saves this track from being really crappy.
Paradice
One of the better songs on the LP, and I definitely could rock to this at anytime. Much better then “Da Da Da” and “Ground Zero” and if you like Weezy’s rock stuff, then you will definitely like this one.
Get A Life
Some more weird stuff from Weezy. I don’t know how I really feel about this one, it’s a weird song, the more I listen to it, the more it grows on me, but it isn’t something that I could see playing regularly on my iTunes library.
On Fire
He is the hottest MC in the game, or at least he was before the release of this album… I don’t know how much I like this song, I am not going to lie, Weezy has talent. He can play instruments and can rap, which is sick, but I don’t really like his “rock” felt album.
Drop The World (Feat. Eminem)
Probably the best song on the album, hands down! This one really isn’t too “rock” compared to the rest of the album. Eminem really takes it home at the end of the track, and he really takes it from a normal sounding track to a crazy dope house track. Something to definitely download and listen to, and it should have been the lead single off the album, no questions asked!
Runnin’ (Feat. Shanell)
Why not follow the best song on the album with another solid track? A song that I definitely liked, again, it is hard for me to really vibe with this new Weezy because I am not used to it. Like “American Star” Shanell does a great job with the vocals and really adds to the song.
One Way Trip (Feat. Kevin Rudolf)
The first rocker to ever get signed to a Hip-Hop label, Rudolf definitely had some creative genius with the tracks on Rebirth. I would like to think that his album sort of put Weezy on to doing some stuff other then Rap/Hip-Hop. Rudolf did a solid job on this one, and unlike some of the other tracks on the album, I could definitely listen to this one on a regular basis.
Knockout (Feat. Nicki Minaj)
Four solid tracks in a row, I guess he saved the best for last! Nicki Minaj kills this one, and the rock filled beat is something that is really great. I am not going to lie though, Weezy’s rock voice can get annoying sometimes! Nicki saves the track at the 50 second mark. Give this one a listen, even rock heads out there will appreciate this track!
The Price Is Wrong
Looks like we won’t be going five-for-five. This may be one of the worst tracks on the album. I truly hated it, and I advise just not even giving it a listen.
Die For You
I have mixed feelings on this track. At times, I like it, and at other times, it just doesn’t really speak to me. I guess you will have to give this one a listen and figure it out for yourself. Something I would listen to every now and then, but nothing too special.
So Over You (Feat. Shanell)
Let’s end the album with a bang, shall we? Shanell does it again, and I really dig the whole Wayne x Shanell collabs we have seen on the album. This may be the worst of the three tracks she is featured on, but I really liked this track. A lot more then the majority of the other songs on Rebirth.
So let’s sum, up the album as a whole, shall we? Overall, I give the new rock stars album a B/B+. I was expecting a bit more creative genius on it, but don’t get me wrong, this is definitely a change. I liked it a bit less then I liked Kanye’s 808′s album, mainly because 808′s still had that Hip-Hop vibe to it, and in the case of Rebirth, it was just a whole different genre. I must say though, I am thoroughly impressed with Lil’ Wayne’s ability to play and learn how to play instruments and to put out a rock album. I won’t lie, the album as a whole really wasn’t my favorite, but it is something different and I can appreciate the New Orleans rap stars attempt to try something different. An “A” for effort, no questions asked there, but at the end of the day, if you are going to put out an album, it has to be an “A” for quality as well! I am really looking forward to Lil’ Wayne’s release of Tha Carter IV, which is rumored to be coming out in 2010 along with the rock album. Also, be on the lookout for I Can’t Feel My Face, which will either be released as a mixtape or an album. I have been waiting a long time for the Juelz Santana x Lil’ Wayne collaboration to release, and hopefully it will be hitting the music industry soon!
