Joshua Bennett ft. Amjay – Don't Let Me Go

by TheSideNote on August 28, 2010

For anyone in the blogosphere who doesn’t know, I love spoken word poetry. And there are few better poets out there than Joshua Bennett, alumnus of UPenn. He came out with a poetry book while still in college, and toured the nation spitting gorgeous verse while balancing his Ivy League education. And it just makes us college kids look bad.

Anyway, an interesting thing popped up in my Facebook newsfeed. My friend had commented on a picture by Joshua Bennett. Turns out, it was album art, promoting a single off a soon to be released mixtape. I had no idea this guy was a rapper, and if it was anything like his poetry, I know it had to be worth a few spins. I am now, officially, in love with this song. In the vein of B.o.B. and Drake, he doesn’t spend his time rapping about bitches, hos, pimping, or drug dealing, but love and feeling with a smooth flow and incredible simile.

I wanted to hold her smile for ransom, / walked up, said she had a body like a handgun.

Seriously. That is a line in this song. Seriously.

Also, AmJay’s got serious pipes, laying down a hook that might, no, will haunt my dreams. She even played keyboard, electric and acoustic guitar, and bass guitar for the track, as if she wasn’t amazing enough already.

Download this song right now, and be on the lookout for the mixtape dropping real soon.

For anyone who questions this guy’s authority, here’s Josh performing a poem AT THE WHITE HOUSE An MC approved by Mr. Obama? Yes please.
